We’ve seen it on many Facebook posts throughout our industry. Someone signed up with a host agency thinking it was the perfect fit, but then after signing the contract, maybe even a few years into the agreement, they realize that it is not the right fit. There can be a number of reasons to outgrow a host agency relationship. Maybe you’re expanding/shrinking your team, perhaps you need different technology, or it could also be that you just don’t have the same vibe anymore. Whatever the reason, your focus should be on the best growth potential for your travel business.
So, what happens if you are no longer happy with your current host agency and want to find a new one? There’s a lot that goes into it, but before just jumping ship and signing up elsewhere, try following these steps—
- Assess your reasons for wanting to leave: Identify what you do and don’t like about your current host travel agency. This includes aspects such as commission structure, support, resources, etc. This will help you in your search for a new agency that better suits your needs.
- Arrange a meeting: Reach out to the management staff at your current host agency and explain your frustrations. Give them the chance to make it right by you and your business.
- Schedule consultations with potential new agencies: Reach out to the agencies you are interested in and schedule consultations with them. Ask questions about their commission structure, support system, resources, and any other concerns you have. Be sure to use the interview questions listed above, along with your “reasons for leaving” your current agency.
- Compare and contrast: Evaluate each agency you’ve consulted with, comparing their offerings, commission structures, support systems, and any other factors that are important to you.
- Consider other factors: Think about other factors that may be important to you, such as the agency’s location, work-life balance, and company culture.
- Ask for references: Ask the agencies you are considering for references from other travel agents who have worked with them. This can give you insight into their experiences and help you make an informed decision.
- Evaluate the training and support programs: Ensure that the new agency provides a comprehensive training and support program to help you transition smoothly and succeed in your new role.
- Negotiate the terms of your agreement: Once you’ve made your decision, negotiate the terms of your agreement with your new host agency. Make sure you understand all of the terms & conditions before signing your agreement.
- Start the transition process: Work with your new agency to make the transition as smooth as possible. Update your marketing materials and notify your clients of the change (if it benefits them/you). It’s a great way to touch base with your client and let them know about all of the new, added benefits you’ll be providing to their business.
Finding the right host is crucial for the success of your travel agency. A host agency should be an extension of your business to provide resources that provide benefits to both you and your clients. Over the years, there have been many advisors who have left one host in the hopes of finding something better, only to find out that it was not a good move in the end. It takes a lot of time and effort to switch host agencies, transfer bookings, learn new technologies, obtain supplier logins, and more. Be sure to do your homework and find the right fit for your business from the start!
